Lesbian and Gay Parenting

In a society where gays and lesbians are opposed a great deal, gaining parenthood rights is a big struggle for gays and lesbians. Researchers have come to the conclusion that the sexual preferences of the children are not altered in any way if gay or lesbian parents bring them up together. The love expressed by parents' remains the same, whether they are heterosexual parents or homosexuals. All a child needs is love in the initial stages of childhood, whether mom fosters it or dad is a different question all together. Even in heterosexual couples there are kids who are left alone inside the premises of home with both the partners working out. After all, heterosexuals also get divorced affecting the formative years of the child when he or she witnesses the family breaking apart.

Anti-gay activists argue that the difference lies in the upbringing of the children. For instance the adopted daughters of lesbian mothers show great deal of interest in traditionally male oriented occupations. The sons brought up by lesbian mothers depict tendencies of homosexual nature, which is almost negligible in the children of heterosexual couples. Two fathers cannot replace a mother and two mothers cannot fill the need of a father. Irrespective of what the studies reveal, there has been tremendous amount of arguments and counter-arguments with no definite solution to this problem. According to the anti-gay activists, personality development is a major issue in gay and lesbian parenting. Children of same sex couples face difficulty in expressing themselves and are more prone to sexual abuse.

There can be disastrous psychological effect in the child's mind if his peers and friends look down upon the homosexual identity of the parents. It is therefore essential for the same sex couples to reveal and make their child understand their relationship before the outsiders start taking that initiative. They are best ones to throw light upon this issue and protect the young child who might fall prey to the anti-gay society without being a part of it. Henceforth, it cannot and should not be stated that gay and lesbian parents are unfit in any aspect to become parents. The home environments provided by same sex couples is more or less the same as that by heterosexual couples. What makes life tough for a homosexual couple and their child is the reaction of the society. All they need is a little more tolerant society for the betterment of the gay and lesbian community.
